Washington D.C. (May 7, 2020) – With hurricane season and wildfire season approaching, the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) strongly recommends that homeowners take proper preventative steps to protect their roofs and properties.

“Homeowners overwhelmingly choose asphalt shingles for their roofs. While a major deciding factor is aesthetic appeal, they are also choosing a product known for reliability and durability,” said Reed Hitchcock, executive vice president of ARMA. “However, extreme weather events can be unpredictable. Being proactive with roof inspection and repair prior to storm season can help avoid serious damage.”

  • Inspect for necessary repairs. Have your roof evaluated by a roofing contractor or a certified home inspector, and have repairs made as soon as possible. A few missing or broken shingles should be individually replaced, and loose shingle tabs should be re-adhered. A more widespread loss or damage of shingles may indicate a need for reroofing.

  • Check for leaks. Leaks can occur where roofs meet sidewalls and around penetrations such as skylights, vent pipes and chimneys. Check for leaks by inspecting interior walls and ceilings for old stains and water damage. Active leaks on the underside of the roof deck can also be revealed by shining a flashlight into the attic during a rainstorm.

  • Assess your landscaping. Cut back branches that scrape against or extend over the roof, as these can be harmful during a storm. Keep in mind that dried or dead vegetation has a higher risk of catching fire. A professional should inspect your yard for trees and other vegetation that may need to be completely removed.

  • Remove debris from your roof and gutters. Clean out gutters and roof valleys to ensure they are not clogged with leaves, branches or litter. Be advised that homeowners should not climb onto their roofs. This should only be done by professionals.

ARMA also advises homeowners to familiarize themselves with extreme weather safety guidelines from public utilities and government authorities.
