How to Properly Design, Install and Maintain Asphalt Shingle Roofs That Last

ARMA’s Educational Session at IRE to Focus on Proper Asphalt Shingle Installation and the Components of a Durable Roofing System

Washington (January 22, 2018) – Professional roofers attending the International Roofing Expo (IRE) can learn how properly designed, installed and maintained asphalt shingle roofing systems help provide superior roof protection, leak prevention and durability against weather.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is hosting an educational session titled, “Proper Application of Asphalt Shingles: Path to Performance” which will review building code and standards requirements for asphalt shingles and their installation, including high wind and wildfire exposure regions. The presentation will also highlight the key elements that make up a durable asphalt shingle roofing system, and proper installation techniques and inspection methods to maintain a roof’s effectiveness. ARMA’s session is scheduled for Thursday, February 8, from 7:45 – 9:45 a.m.

“Asphalt shingles provide an extremely aesthetic, affordable – and most importantly – durable roofing system,” said Tim McQuillen, ARMA’s director of technical services. “When installed properly, asphalt shingles, as part of a comprehensive roofing system, can provide superior performance for protecting your roof, your home and your family from the elements.”

The presentation will be led by four industry experts:

  • Panelist: John Kouba, director of technical services at Malarkey Roofing Products, has been involved in the manufacturing of asphalt based roofing products since 1993 and has conducted over 6,000 roof inspections.

  • Panelist: Sid Dinwiddie, technical services manager at PABCO Roofing Products, a 40+ year industry veteran specializing in quality assurance, product development and technical services. Dinwiddie is also the co-chairman of the ARMA Technical Affairs Committee.

  • Panelist: Aaron R. Phillips, corporate director of technical services at TAMKO Building Products, Inc., spent 17 years in research and development before transitioning to technical services in 2005. Phillips is also the TAMKO representative to ARMA.

  • Moderator: Tim McQuillen, ARMA’s director of technical services, has been in the building products industry for over 25 years and serves as the staff liaison to the ARMA Technical Affairs Committee and the ARMA Technical Resource Group.

The presentation will focus on steep-slope roofing applications exclusively. For more information, visit ARMA in the product showcase area at the IRE, or visit ARMA’s website at www.asphaltroofing.org.
