Asphalt shingles are manufactured with factory-applied adhesive sealant strips to enhance wind resistance in shingle roof systems. The sealant is typically an asphalt-based adhesive that adheres shingles together after installation.  This adhesive strip may be located on the front or back surface of shingles, depending on the shingle type and manufacturer. In order to prevent the sealant strip from causing the shingles to stick together while in the package, a release film is applied to the shingle surface during the manufacturing process.

The release film is factory-applied on the shingle in a specific location. When the shingles are in the package prior to installation, the film aligns with the sealant strip to keep the shingles from sticking to each other. Once the shingles are removed from the package and aligned on the roof for proper installation, the release film has served its purpose and should simply be left in place. The release film found on the shingles prevents the shingles from sticking together in the package only.

Consult the manufacturer’s storage and installation instructions for additional information.
