Asphalt roofing is chosen for its beauty, affordability, and reliability
The ARMA Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program celebrates the most outstanding steep- and low-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America, evaluated in four key categories: Why Asphalt, Project Challenges, Distinction, and Beauty.
Each year, roofing professionals from various sectors submit their projects, highlighting the benefits of asphalt roofing for residential and commercial applications. The awards program has evolved into a highly regarded industry competition, encompassing the full range of asphalt roofing systems.
To be considered for an award, winners must exhibit exceptional skill in asphalt roofing, focusing on meticulous attention to detail and the use of high-quality materials. Top-scoring projects are awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze medals, with additional honors available in Best-in-Class categories, such as In the Neighborhood, Commercial/Mixed Use, Craftsmanship, and Technical Difficulty.
A panel of industry experts assesses all submissions and has selected the following winners of the 2025 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. These projects set the standard for excellence in the industry, showcasing innovative design, visual appeal, and the reliable performance of asphalt roofing systems.

GOLD: URBAN GRIND ROOFING LLC
When the homeowners’ roof began failing, they sought a high-quality replacement that could withstand the elements and enhance their home’s aesthetic. After a thorough consultation with Urban Grind Roofing LLC, they decided to install CertainTeed’s Grand Manor® Shingles in Brownstone—a luxurious slate-like finish known for its durability and elegance.
The roof’s challenging 16/12 pitch required expert craftsmanship, with the removal of the old roof followed by the meticulous installation of 34 custom-fabricated metal valleys and crickets to eliminate dead valleys. Five standing seam metal accents were also incorporated, ensuring seamless integration and structural integrity. Spanning over a week, this project showcased the precision and technical expertise needed to balance functionality and beauty.
Asphalt shingles were the best choice for this complex project due to their versatility, aesthetic appeal, and performance. CertainTeed’s Grand Manor® Shingles offer Class 4 impact resistance, Class A fire resistance, algae protection, and wind resistance up to 130 mph. Their lightweight nature made installation easier, while their visual impact elevated the home’s overall style.
The team delivered an exceptional result, transforming a failing roof into a beautiful, durable, and reliable system. The Grand Pinnacle Project – Cornelius is a testament to how a properly installed asphalt roofing system can provide peace of mind while enhancing a home’s design for years to come.

SILVER: GPD FLATROOFING LTD.
The Penn-co Office headquarters in Steinbach, Manitoba, now boasts a state-of-the-art roofing system expertly completed by GPD Flatroofing Ltd. Designed entirely by Penn-co, the building features a complex roof structure with varying heights, high walls, second-level patios, and elegant entrance canopies.
To address the project’s architectural and environmental demands, GPD Flatroofing Ltd. utilized high-performance Polyglass materials, including a premium base and cap sheet system. The heat-welded asphalt application provided the necessary strength, flexibility, and durability to ensure the roof could withstand Manitoba’s harsh winter conditions while adhering to the project timeline.
This innovative system allowed for year-round installation, even in colder temperatures, thanks to its staggered base and cap layers that provided overlapping seams. This design minimized the risk of water infiltration, improved resistance to wind uplift, and accommodated thermal expansion and contraction caused by extreme temperature fluctuations. The heat-welded asphalt roofing system offers reliability, ease of maintenance, and long-term protection.
The project also overcame significant challenges, including high upstands, closely placed curbs, and numerous structural penetrations. The team’s attention to detail and adherence to rigorous installation practices resulted in a successful execution despite these complexities.
Beyond its functional strengths, the completed roof enhances the building’s architectural intrigue. The Penn-co Office Steinbach project demonstrates how asphalt roofing can achieve a perfect balance between technical excellence and aesthetic appeal.

BRONZE: COOL ROOFS
Cool Roofs transformed The Grand Manor on Johnson Road in Germantown, Tennessee, with a roofing solution that blends beauty, durability, and expert craftsmanship. Featuring CertainTeed’s Grand Manor® Shingles in Weathered Wood, the roof enhances the home’s aesthetic appeal while providing long-lasting, reliable protection.
The project faced several challenges, particularly in safeguarding the property’s high-end landscaping, custom driveway, and swimming pool during the installation. To safeguard these features, Cool Roofs implemented a jobsite protection system and used a lift machine, along with two dedicated on-site managers overseeing every phase of the project. This meticulous attention to detail allowed the team to complete the project without damaging the property.
The homeowner initially considered slate or shake roofing but ultimately chose asphalt shingles for their balance of traditional charm, reduced weight, and outstanding weather resistance. The shingles’ multi-layered design provided a stunning visual appeal while also requiring less structural reinforcement compared to alternative materials, making asphalt the clear choice.
The craftsmanship of the installation further set the project apart, with custom-fabricated metalwork for valleys and transitions, ensuring a seamless and durable finish. The result is a roof that protects the home and elevates its curb appeal, making this project a prime example of roofing excellence that will stand the test of time.

BRONZE: STONEBRIDGE ROOFING, ENERGY & EXTERIORS
Stonebridge Roofing, Energy & Exteriors undertook the meticulous restoration of The Bailey House, an 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne Victorian residence built in 1895, located in the historic district of Fernandina Beach. This iconic home required special permitting to comply with rigorous historical preservation standards, adding complexity to the project.
The roof restoration presented technical and operational hurdles, including working on an intricate, steep-pitched roof while preserving delicate stained-glass windows and crafting custom copper flashings for chimney crickets. Limited site access made material loading and debris removal particularly labor-intensive, further showcasing the team’s dedication and expertise. Despite these challenges, the project was executed with exceptional precision.
Asphalt shingles were the ideal choice due to their ability to balance modern performance with aesthetic compatibility. The home required materials that adhered to preservation guidelines while offering reliable protection. The team installed GAF Timberline® HDZ™ Shingles in Slate, chosen for their durability and ability to blend effortlessly with the home’s timeless heritage. These shingles combine high wind resistance and advanced manufacturing technology with a visually appealing design.
As a landmark property in a tightly regulated historic district, The Bailey House restoration was held to the highest standards. The result is a historically preserved, weather-resistant roofing system designed to last for generations, earning praise from the community and industry alike.

BEST-IN-CLASS AWARD: CRAFTSMANSHIP CATEGORY: ELEVATED ROOFING & SIDING
As part of the comprehensive renovation of Stubbs Park in Centerville, Ohio, Elevated Roofing and Siding delivered a transformative roofing solution for the amphitheater that combines functionality, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The project required addressing the structure’s aging roof while seamlessly integrating it with upgrades to sound, lighting, and accessibility systems. The curved, angular design of the amphitheater posed unique challenges, which were met with precision and creativity, resulting in a roof that enhanced the venue’s charm and performance.
For this high-profile project, Owens Corning TruDefinition® Duration® Shingles in Driftwood were selected. Asphalt shingles were chosen for their flexibility, lightweight nature, and weather resistance, essential qualities given Ohio’s unpredictable climate. Their ability to conform to the amphitheater’s complex geometry while reducing structural strain made them the ideal material. Additionally, the shingles harmonize with the park’s natural surroundings, elevating the amphitheater as a cultural centerpiece. The roofing system not only safeguards against heavy rain and snow but also ensures minimal maintenance for the long term.
The project’s success stemmed from extraordinary craftsmanship and innovative problem-solving. Elevated Roofing and Siding skillfully navigated environmental factors, preserved the surrounding landscape, and coordinated with other contractors to meet tight schedules. The result is a striking, durable roof that aligns with the park’s vision of creating a welcoming community space.
